Antonín Pelc

He was born on 16 January 1895 in Lišany near Rakovník and died on 24 March 1967 in Prague. Cartoonist, painter and illustrator. He studied at the Prague Academy. In the 1920s he established himself as a political cartoonist, for example in the magazines Šibeničky, Rudé právo, Lidové noviny, The New York Times, Literární noviny. At the beginning of the war he emigrated and traveled the world. In the postwar period his work became a bearer of communist ideology. In the late years he devoted himself mainly to painting, which was influenced by late cubism. He also taught at the Prague Academy. In 1946 he became professor of the School of Applied Arts in Prague, in 1955 he was professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1963 he was awarded the title of National Artist, he was also a laureate of the State Prize and awarded the Order of Labor. From 1934 to 1949 he was a member of the Manes Association of Fine Artists.
